Hoe werkt het spijsverteringssysteem?

Je spijsvertering is een slim en efficiënt systeem dat elke dag hard voor je werkt. De belangrijkste taak? Het omzetten van alles wat je eet en drinkt in energie en voedingsstoffen die je lichaam nodig heeft. Wat overblijft, wordt netjes afgevoerd.
Hieronder volgen we de reis die je eten maakt, stap voor stap.
De reis van je eten: in 5 stappen
Stap 1: De Mond – Het startpunt
Alles begint met de eerste hap. Je tanden vermalen het eten (mechanische vertering) en je speeksel begint al met het afbreken van voedingsstoffen (chemische vertering).
Stap 2: De Maag – De krachtige mixer
Via de slokdarm komt het voedsel in de maag. Zie de maag als een krachtige ‘blender’. Hij kneedt het voedsel en mengt het met sterk maagzuur tot een vloeibare brij.
Stap 3: De Dunne Darm – De voedingsstoffen-magneet
Deze vloeibare brij gaat naar de dunne darm. Dit is het belangrijkste station van de reis. Met hulp van sappen uit de lever en alvleesklier worden hier bijna alle belangrijke voedingsstoffen (vitamines, mineralen, eiwitten, etc.) uit het eten gehaald en aan je bloed afgegeven.
Stap 4: De Dikke Darm – De water-regelaar en eindvormer
Wat overblijft, is een waterige massa van onverteerbare resten. Deze gaat naar de dikke darm. De belangrijkste taak van de dikke darm is om precies genoeg water en zouten uit deze massa te halen, zodat er een soepele, gevormde ontlasting overblijft.
Stap 5: Het Eindstation – Het signaal om te gaan
De gevormde ontlasting wordt opgeslagen in het laatste deel van de dikke darm (het rectum). Zodra dit deel vol is, krijg je een seintje dat het tijd is om naar het toilet te gaan.
Wat als het ritme verstoord is?
Normaal gesproken werkt dit systeem perfect in balans. Maar soms raakt het ritme verstoord.
- Bij obstipatie (verstopping): Beweegt de ontlasting te langzaam door de dikke darm. Hierdoor wordt er te veel water onttrokken, wat leidt tot harde, droge en pijnlijke ontlasting.
- Bij diarree: Beweegt de ontlasting te snel door de dikke darm. Er wordt dan te weinig water onttrokken, wat resulteert in een dunne, waterige ontlasting.
Zorg goed voor je spijsvertering
Een gezonde spijsvertering is de basis van hoe je je voelt. Door vezelrijk te eten, voldoende te drinken en regelmatig te bewegen, help je dit slimme systeem om soepel te blijven werken.
Ervaar je toch klachten? Neem deze dan serieus. Als je regelmatig last hebt van obstipatie, diarree of andere buikklachten, is het verstandig om je huisarts te raadplegen.
