Een volle, gespannen of zelfs pijnlijke buik: een opgeblazen gevoel is een veelvoorkomende klacht. Je bent zeker niet de enige. Vaak is de oorzaak direct te herleiden naar een ander bekend probleem: obstipatie (verstopping).
Hier leggen we uit waarom deze twee vaak hand in hand gaan en wat je eraan kunt doen.
Waarom veroorzaakt obstipatie een opgeblazen gevoel?
Stel je een file voor op de snelweg. Bij obstipatie gebeurt iets vergelijkbaars in je darmen.
- De ‘File’: De ontlasting staat ‘vast’ en beweegt te langzaam door de dikke darm.
- Gisting en Gas: Hierdoor krijgen darmbacteriën extra veel tijd om de onverteerde voedselresten af te breken (een proces dat fermentatie heet). Bij dit proces komt gas vrij.
- Het Resultaat: Dit extra gas hoopt zich op achter de ‘file’ en kan nergens heen. Dit zorgt voor druk, een opgezette buik en dat vervelende, opgeblazen gevoel.
Andere veelvoorkomende oorzaken van een opgeblazen gevoel
Hoewel obstipatie de hoofdoorzaak is, kunnen ook andere factoren meespelen:
- Gasvormend voedsel: Eten van bijvoorbeeld bonen, kool, uien en spruitjes.
- Lucht inslikken: Door te snel te eten, te praten tijdens het eten of door het drinken van koolzuurhoudende dranken.
- Hormonale schommelingen: Veel vrouwen ervaren een opgeblazen gevoel rondom hun menstruatie.
Hoe verminder je een opgeblazen gevoel door obstipatie?
De meest logische aanpak is om de oorzaak van de ‘file’ aan te pakken: de verstopping zelf.
- Stap 1: Breng je stoelgang op gang De meest effectieve manier om het opgeblazen gevoel te verminderen, is door de obstipatie te verhelpen. Begin met leefstijlaanpassingen: eet meer vezels, drink 1,5 tot 2 liter water per dag en blijf in beweging. Helpt dit niet snel genoeg? Een opgeblazen gevoel is meestal onschuldig, maar neem contact op met je huisarts als:
- De klachten lang aanhouden en je dagelijks leven beïnvloeden.
- Je naast het opgeblazen gevoel ook last hebt van hevige pijn, onverklaarbaar gewichtsverlies of bloed bij de ontlasting.
